Potato Seed Production is one of the largest producers of potato mini-tubers in South Africa. Ideally situated on the Long Tom Pass in the Drakensberg Mountain slopes close to Lydenburg (Mashishing), Mpumalanga, PSP is the highest and most agriculturally isolated seed potato and greenhouse tuber production facility in the country.
PSP is renowned for producing top quality potato seeds of most open varieties, including, with permission, contracted varieties (varieties with Plant Breeder Rights in SA), and supplies only superior, early generation seed potatoes.
In 2005, PSP won the prestigious Seed Potato Producer of the Year award for outstanding produce. PSP supplies potato seed to the whole of South Africa and because of its close proximity to the border, exports a lot into the rest of Africa.
In-depth industry-specific expertise and managerial skills ensure that Potato Seed Production offers products of outstanding quality. The company's production unit has been developed into one of South Africa's main facilities for the production of high quality planting material.
In terms of the South African Seed Potato Certification Scheme, two greenhouse tubers per 100 plants or part thereof and 400 tubers per 2,5 hectare G1-G3 or part thereof are tested at Plantovita, which is one of five testing laboratories in the potato industry and fulfills the unique and valuable role as the controlling laboratory of the potato industry.
This laboratory is used for confirmation of the non-bacterial wilt and virus-free status of the seed grown. These tests and certification ensure that we only supply the best possible seed to our customers.
Sterkpuit Farm was established and legislated by the Potato Board in 1971 as the first nuclear seed potato unit in South Arica. In 1978, members of the Mellet family were employed to manage the farm with one sole purpose: to produce and supply seed potatoes of the highest quality to the industry.
In 1994, the unit was privatised but remained under Mellet management until eventually being bought by the family in 2002. Today, after more than 41 years of inception, the Mellet family is still proudly managing this highly successful unit.
The production unit is located 2150 metres above sea level, which is particularly well-suited to the production of seed potatoes. In addition to its altitude, cool summers and cold winters, the farm is also isolated from other farming activities as protected by legislation published in the Government Gazette Nr R2855 of 28/12/79, not allowing any other potato activities within 8 km of the farm.
No foreign potatoes will ever be allowed onto the farm and strict entrance control applies. This helps to ensure that greenhouse tubers and other products from Potato Seed Production are of a uniformly high quality and are free from viral and bacterial infections and other diseases as humanly possible.
